Xiomara Alvarez was recognized as the New Teacher of the Month during the September monthly professional development session at Hempstead ISD. As a new teacher of the month at Hempstead ISD, she received a curriculum t-shirt donated by MaBisha Stubblefield (Bisha’s Bling), and a certificate to display in her room.
Alvarez, who currently teaches a third grade bilingual class, is new to teaching but is not new to the district. Alvarez, a proud Honduran-Salvadoran American, was raised in Hempstead. She is a graduate of the Hempstead High School Class of 2015. Alvarez went on to get her bachelor’s degree in May of 2018 from Prairie View A&M University.
“I am so excited that I started my first year of teaching at Hempstead Elementary, where my educational foundation was formed,” said Alvarez. “I hope to be a part of my student's growth and foundation just like my teachers in Hempstead were for me. I am very excited to have been awarded New Teacher of the Month and I am looking forward to a great year!”
Melissa Skinner, HISD Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction, had great things to say about the first new teacher of the month. “Ms. Alvarez started early setting up routines and procedures with her 3rd-grade students,” said Skinner. “On the 2nd day of school, she was reviewing the CHAMPS expectations for small group instruction and workstation time during her ELAR block. The students practiced how to go to stations, how to read with a group and partner, and how to get help when the teacher is working with a group at the reading table. After practicing the expectations, she reviewed each Letter of CHAMPS (Conversation, Help, Activity, Movement, Participation, Success) with her students. She set the students up for success by saying "You did a good job but I know you can do even better tomorrow." She is encouraging a growth mindset with her students. The 3rd graders were encouraged that they can do better each day they are in school- continuing to grow and learn. We are so excited that Ms. Alvarez decided to join the Hempstead ISD team.”
Congratulations Xiomara Alvarez for being recognized as a New Teacher of the Month at Hempstead ISD!
